When the load tends to slow down the converter output shaft, the hydraulic fluid in the toque converter is re-routed against the converter reactor blades adding reaction torque to the engine torque. This torque is similar to that achieved when shifting a mechanical transmission from 1:1 ratio to a lower gear. In effect, a torque converter offers an infinite range of torque ratios, similar to, but smoother than the step-by-step shifting of a mechanical transmission from a 1:1 ratio to lower gears.
